About F.A.R.M
FARM is an acronym for The Future Action Reclamation Mob. Our goals include:
- Manifesting Mahatma Gandhi’s “BE THE CHANGE YOU WISH TO SEE IN THE WORLD.” The FARM is an alternative form of non-violent protest. While we may not be holding picket signs and screaming on the corner of Market and Powell, we care about the homeless situation in SF. We care about the plight of the day laborers and immigration labor rights. We care about the environmentally toxic soil that surrounds CCA. We have the power to provide ourselves with an alternative to corporate farming practices- we have the power to do it ourselves.
- Defining and referring to the FARM as a community farm: for everyone to work on and for anyone to eat from. This includes the transient homeless and day laborers on Hooper Street, as well as the CCA community… a tradition to be passed on from one CCA cohort to the next.
- Building raised beds and detoxifying the soil underneath at the same time. We hope to eventually detoxify the entire 1/4 mile long parkway strip, using permaculture techniques. We are receiving advice from an expert permaculturist and teacher at the Permaculture Guild here in SF.
- Employing permaculture ethics and procedures. This means agriculture design that requires little water and no chemicals. There are specific things that need to be planted at certain times. Within the permaculture practice, the FARM will tell you what’s next! While that might sound a little trippy, we are getting help from other gardeners in town.
- Flexibility. Currently, the edible FARM occupies first 66 feet from the corner of 8th street/Hooper. Remediation spans the next 36 feet. We will go further when people want to care for the land.
- Expansion/Coalition Building. We see this as a first step in a state-wide, national, and international movement. Please let us know if you would like to build and design your own FARM in your part of the world. We would like to facilitate the exchange of knowledge between FARMs and FARMers. We are developing an information database to allow for argicultural, political, social, human and environmental information exchange.
